The growth in agricultural productivity and significance of science and technology in contributing to this growth has been well documented by Bredahl, Cline, Evenson (1967), Griliches (1964), and Peterson. The results of these studies generally indicate that over the past several decades, investment in agricultural research has paid off with relatively high rates of return. Michigan State University's Extension and Agricultural Experiment Station have restructured their educational delivery system through implementation of area of expertise teams. Adopting the concept of self-directed work teams from industry has resulted in enhanced credibility with stakeholders, a seamless linkage between research and Extension, and increased appropriations from the state legislature.

Federal defense projects have let to rapid population changes in many communities. These communities often have experienced rapid growth during the construction and installation phase, followed by a population decrease when the project became operational and labor requirements declined. Large industrial construction projects (e.g., construction of coal conversion plants) may confront other communities with similar adjustment problems.

North Dakota's input-output model has become an integral part of many economic research activities involving state issues. Since its development to analyze the economic impacts associated with irrigation development in the 1960s, the model has been updated and used to analyze the effects of a wide variety of projects in North Dakota, Because the model is used and referenced frequently by economic researchers, the nontechnical audience often requests additional information to explain the input-output model and the theory behind it.
